University students should be required to take history courses no matter what field they study.(20090613)
History courses are crucial in general and seemingly always cross any form of barriers among varied disciplines. University students, for sure, should take history courses, regardless of their fields.
When it comes to the significance of learning history, one might doubt if it has anything to do with one's future career or other practical consideration. However, history is not about dealing with errands or even larger case, for example, earning money. It is about changing the way of thinking.
University students, for a large percentage, have not been fully aware of their political views, religious leanings or philosophical perspectives. These are things more important than simply looking for a job or involving in a relationship because this is not so easy to be built up in a day or so. Taking history courses can possibly create a clear outline of how the entire story started and ended with an insightful interpretation of the very nature of human thoughts and some sort of social mobility and historical mechanism.
It is very inspiring to trace back to, say, approximately two thousand years ago and read a fine diary recorded by Julius Caesar (this man's words might be a little tedious to some extent though) to see how the Roman Republic pushed its boundary far into the "uncivilized barren" concealing with a huge crisis embedded under beneath of their political structure. And when you are led by history professors to go over the coming historians' perspectives of how the Roman legacy effects the modern civilization, it is truly a pleasant experience for most people and certainly, it will help university students to locate themselves in a swamp of disordered occasions more easily.
I myself was a history major student. I would say, you never know what history can tell you until you actually attend a history class and start turning pages of the old school's paper. It is not only preferred but demanded that university students of all field study to know at least a little common sense about the past and the reason of human being and the spirits of the intellectuals. I believe those giant volumes of masterpiece would definitely go beyond the picture of which one could possibly imagine.
University is not an institution where people are trained to achieve craftsmanship or where a dream of becoming rich comes true. History is far beyond that.
