中国315消费者协会于1987年9月被国际消费者联盟组织接受为正式成员。从这一年开始，每年的3月15日，中国消费者协会及其地方各级协会也都要联合各有关部门共同举办大规模的宣传活动，运用各种方式介绍消费知识和有关法律知识，宣传消费者的权利；唤醒、提高消费者的自我保护意识；促进全社会都来关心、支持消费者合法权益保护工作。
