动词短语phrasal verbs是一种相当有趣且易于使用的结构。例如我们非常熟悉的give up(放弃),就是动词短语。它通常是由一个非常简单的动词,再加上一个介词来组成。无论是在托福听力考试,还是在实际的英语日常对话当中,动词短语的使用都是相当频繁的。
然而动词短语却经常会成为理解上的难点,事实上,我们在看美剧的时候,如果留心一下,会发现很多字幕组都会翻译错误(比如讲pull it off翻译成扒下来)。
因为它的意思不能够通过规则进行判断,比如give up放弃,它的意思和give或者up都没有任何联系,无法通过单个词的意思去推理出这个词组的意思。再比如act up,这个短语的意思是无理取闹、出毛病(e.g. The car's engine began to act up./ Single parents take it hard when their children act up.),单看act和up这两个单词,完全无法联想到这个词组的意思。因此,要理解动词短语只能够通过不断的日常积累,在反复接触的过程中逐渐习得。
